Great Stories are written by Guiding Ohio Online AmeriCorps Members about their service.
When I first started my service as an AmeriCorps member I had no idea what this program was all about. Yeah, I read the guide book, and I checked out some example of other members’ work, but I really didn’t have a clue as to what I should do next. So I started asking patrons and the library employees what types of technology help they think they would be interested in learning.
We set up an interest sheet at the front desk and used the suggestions from the patrons as a baseline to get started from. A few ideas stuck out and I took those suggestions and ran with it. I set the date for the first month’s classes, put up posters, banners, flyers, and handouts. Everything looked like it was already taking off. Then the day of the first class came. I was super nervous, I had never taught anybody anything let alone multiple people at once. Then the biggest let down ever, only two people showed up. Bummer. Did I do something wrong? Had I forgotten something and people just didn’t know what I was there for?
I went back to the drawing board and took a look at my approach. Nothing seemed off so, I made no changes. I waited for the next class to see the turnout. When the day to teach the class came around I was surprised. All but one sign-up, showed up to the class. At the end of the class I told the people who came that I also do on-on-one tutoring as well and to make an appointment if they like.
Everything seemed to explode from there. My classes have been full, I get calls and emails for all sorts of technology help. Not a week goes by where I don’t have an appointment and / or a class. I even have regular who will come a class just because they think it sounds interesting.
