Guiding Ohio Online is an AmeriCorps program that places members in rural Ohio libraries to deliver digital literacy training through computer classes, one-on-one computer assistance, outreach, and volunteer recruitment. Our vision is for every Ohioan to be able to fully participate in online government, search and apply for jobs online, understand the risks and benefits of internet finance, connect with family online, and protect personal information in the digital age.
John was one of my first students, and quickly became one of my favorites. I met him shortly after starting my term with AmeriCorps; he was a missed phone call when I was out of the library. All I knew about him prior to our first appointment was that he had worked with the previous AmeriCorps member, so I knew he had some experience, but was unsure how much. I decided to start from scratch with a “computer basics” lesson, that was almost immediately thrown out the window. I met John, and he had a list of goals
Great Stories are written by Guiding Ohio Online AmeriCorps Members about their service.
When I heard of the Guiding Ohio Online program and what AmeriCorps members do for their communities, I knew it was the right step for me to go in. Straight out of grad school, I knew that the road for my career was just starting but in this job climate things seem to move slowly. I wanted to do something that I would enjoy but would also help me build teaching skills. I sat down and immediately filled out my application when I came across the Guiding Ohio Online position. I have always felt joy and enthusiasm when helping others and sharing something that might make their life easier. When I give someone information that truly helps them be more informed and I can see that they are truly grateful it makes everything we do in this program worthwhile.
