Guiding Ohio Online is an AmeriCorps program that places members in rural Ohio libraries to deliver digital literacy training through computer classes, one-on-one computer assistance, outreach, and volunteer recruitment.Our vision is for every Ohioan to be able to fully participate in online government, search and apply for jobs online, understand the risks and benefits of internet finance, connect with family online, and protect personal information in the digital age.
The first time I began volunteering was in 7th grade, where I joined an organization called student helping students. It was great to be associated amongst others who shared similar interests to positively impact the students in our junior high. I continued to participate with the organization throughout high school along with several other organizations. During my college years, I made it a prominent decision to continue volunteering my services to organizations despite the lack of time I had due to school and work.
John was one of my first students, and quickly became one of my favorites. I met him shortly after starting my term with AmeriCorps; he was a missed phone call when I was out of the library. All I knew about him prior to our first appointment was that he had worked with the previous AmeriCorps member, so I knew he had some experience, but was unsure how much. I decided to start from scratch with a “computer basics” lesson, that was almost immediately thrown out the window. I met John, and he had a list of goals
